Size the tank to the bore, not just the rig. A 500-gallon system such as the Ditch Witch FM5x suits compact drills on short utility shots. Rigs in the 20,000 to 40,000 lb class typically run a 1,300-gallon FM13x or Vermeer equivalent so the pumps never wait on fluid. Longer shots and reclaiming add tank volume or a reclaimer.
Is a mud reclaimer worth it?
If you run larger bores, work where water is expensive or haul spent fluid off site, a reclaimer such as the Ditch Witch MR90 pays for itself in disposal and water costs. For short utility shots with easy disposal, a mixer and tank trailer is usually enough.
